The museums of the city cover a variety of subjects from the popular Vasa Museum which has a well-preserved 17th century warship within its walls or the open air museum called Skansen which is formed as a Swedish traditional village with time-honoured crafts and activities being performed every day to attract the tourist interested in the Sweden of the past. The Museum of History contains the greatest collection of Viking artefacts from the country with many thousands dating from a millennium or more ago and including Viking burial treasure and goods they traded with countries around Europe and the Middle East.
Most of the museums have self-guided tours on headsets which help your understanding, especially when the exhibits may not be labelled in English. Another great visit is to the Royal Castle which overlooks the old part of the city and which now contains a museum of the history of its involvement in protecting not just the city but also the empire.
