Begin your visit to Stockholm by walking around Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm. There you’ll be entranced by the clapperboard houses painted in various hues or the stone merchant’s houses that line the twisting streets. Getting to it is easy as there’s a stop on the subway called Gamla Stan which will take you out into the heart of the area.
Whilst there, points of interest include the beautiful German church of Tyska Kyrkan with its copper roof or the Riddarholmskyrkan, another church, this time a perfectly preserved example from medieval times. In Gamla Stan you’ll find the gorgeous Royal Palace as well as the ornate town hall. Sweden and Stockholm avoided damage during the Second World War by remaining neutral and the only damage done to this stunning district was from modern day attempts to rationalise housing in the city which demolished some older parts.
