The city grew partly because of this and partly because the sheltered bay was used as feeding and breeding ground of whales which early settlers saw as an easy source of income. Today the city is positioning itself as an adventure holiday resort with lots of exciting things to do around the city. Bird spotters will want to visit the three major wetland areas around Walvis Bay where some rare species can be seen including the Damara Tern flitting among the countless flamingos that feed there.
Elsewhere you can go kite surfing offshore as the wind and waves are perfect for the sport. Back on land you can fish in the rich waters but make sure you get a licence. A favourite activity is to hire the sand version of a snowboard and take to the dunes back from the shore for some dune boarding. It’s also possible to take a boat trip out into the bay to watch the dolphins and whales but you need to be prepared for it’s often foggy on this coastline.
