It’s a thriving university town meaning that there’s always plenty to do, especially for the young or young at heart. Hire a car in Pune to explore the countryside and visit the hill forts from where you’ll get a great view back towards the city. For older history take a trip to the Pataleshwar caves where you’ll discover an 8th century temple carved out of a huge boulder. Apart from being a feat of genius it is all the more surprising in that urban sprawl has left it in the middle of the city.
Another interesting and important place to visit is the Palace of the Aga Khan, not just for the opulence of the building but for its historical interest as the ‘prison’ of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba, who died their during their confinement there in 1942. In the garden of the palace you’ll find the tomb of the great man’s wife.
