Hiring a car in Mumbai is still the best way to get around despite the traffic. Most of the tourist sights are concentrated in South Mumbai and in particular within the walled city of Fort St George. There you’ll find colonial buildings on a monumental scale including the Gateway to India, a huge arch built for the visit of King George V in 1911. Many other fabulous buildings are also found there, mostly built for municipal function including the railway station and the police headquarters. If you’re staying in the city and looking for something special, the Taj Mahal Hotel is located there, opposite the Gateway to India.
Elsewhere, Mumbai has great beaches although you need to be careful for some of them are contaminated with raw sewage. The cleaner ones are in the northwest of the city but few tourists choose to swim in the sea.
