Rhodes Town actually prefers to be called Rhodes City and is important for it is there that the Colossus was said to have stood across the harbour, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today the harbour is marked by two deer atop pillars but there are plans to rebuild the Colossus and restore the harbour to its former ancient glory.
Faliraki is the party town of the island and where it’s party by night and sleep off the excesses on the beach the next day. It has been criticised for its excesses and has cleaned up its act but it still is not best suited to young families.
Ialysos, south west of Rhodes City is one of the better beaches for families with a well organised, safe beach and plentiful four and five star hotels which offer good facilities for families. Lindos, on the eastern coast, is an important town in Rhodes for its archaeological interest being the site of an ancient acropolis.
