On the E52 southeast of Munich is Salzburg. One of the key sights there is the Hellbrun Palace which was the summer home of the Bishops of Salzburg. Take a trip up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress which gives an impressive view out over the city.
South of the city is Innsbruck on the E45. Innsbruck is known as the capital of the Austrian Alps and is a prime winter sports centre which in summer uses the glorious mountains around the city for hiking and camping. The Bergiselschanze there has transformed from a ski jump used for the Winter Olympics to a city landmark that will be protected and preserved.
North of Munich on the E45 is Nuremberg. Nuremberg has a chequered history being at one point the main place where Hitler stoked up nationalist sentiments at huge rallies and where, after the war, the trials of Nazis were held. The city has much more pleasant attractions to offer including an imposing fortress that looks down over the city and many medieval and Baroque buildings that make for attractive walks.
