Melbourne is also the home of Aussie Rules football where, until 1987, all the teams in the top league hailed from Melbourne or nearby Geelong.
Outside of the city there’s much to be seen too with a stately home, Werribee, the equivalent of the UK’s Woburn or Longleat, having an extensive free roaming wildlife park. In the winter, many people head for Mount Donna Buang for the best chance of seeing snow. When the first falls take place, the scenery is magical and almost alpine. The scenic drive to Port Phillip Bay is spectacular and there are several resorts of note to stop off in, including Sorrento and Portsea which have excellent beaches and great surf.
Melbourne also has its share of vineyards and wineries with the Yarra Valley estates being some of the best. You can pick up details of the vineyards and do a tour, tasting the products of each.
